At the scene
- Check for injuries. Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Get to a safe spot if you can. Turn on your hazards.
- Call the police. Ask how to get the report number.
- Exchange name, phone, insurance, license, and plate with the other driver.
- Ask any witnesses for a name and number.
- Photograph: each vehicle, the whole scene, the road and signals, anything on the ground.
- Write down the time, place, weather, and what happened.
In the days after
- Consider getting checked by a doctor, even if you feel fine.
- Follow any treatment instructions you are given.
- Get a copy of the police report when it is available.
- Keep every receipt: medical, towing, rental, repairs.
- Write a short timeline: what happened, and how you have felt since.
- Put all of it in one folder, paper or on your phone.
